The Power of Letting Go

There is a ticker tape of thoughts running through my head all day long, non –stop. You have the same and so does everyone else on this planet. They are relentless in their numbers and they have a certain shade of flavour for each person. Some have a more angry vibe, others a more lighter note, others smelling of resentment. They run through your head at differing speeds and are akin the having the opposite of a cheerleader with you wherever you go. Except this voice is judging, commentating, regaling the past and predicting the future all at one. This isn’t about tracking down specific thoughts and throwing them out or selecting ones that have a brighter sensation to them and trying to hoard those.

This is really about letting them all go, each one, allowing it to come in and out without you interrupting the flow or taking any of them too seriously. As esoteric as it may sound there is another voice not literally but metaphorically behind and in-between all the gaps of the thoughts that are running on your ticker tape currently. And this other voice is one that has some content worth listening to because it will guide you and be useful to you in the very moment you need it. The moment being now. It will not be predicting the future or relaying the past, it will be talking to you in the now about the now with something you can do Now. And that is a big difference from the voice that you and I are all used to listening to and following. The voices in our heads all sound like a marching assault on all that has gone wrong, all that is going right which must be maintained for our happiness to be upheld. Along with the predictions of coming attractions which are either really wanted or really feared and it is your job to juggle all these thoughts and decide which ones to make your own, which ones to feed and which ones to let go of and let me tell you it is a full time job. One that does not even pay minimum wage and yet we can be slaves to it.

And when it comes to creating it can be an obstacle difficult to bypass as one negative nagging thought breeds at an exponential rate and before you know it there are any number of really good reasons why you shouldn’t even give it a go. And so you don’t. An idea is born and dies without ever being expressed because you lent an ear to the ticker tape of your thinking telling you all the ways it could all go so wrong.

So here is a novel idea, one to experiment with for as long or as little as you like but there is nothing to lose by trying it. For a day, week, month or year, don’t take on board your running commentary, don’t abide by it, listen to it or obey it. Let it roll on by. Good or bad, wonderful thoughts or disastrous ones, let them all float on by and see what happens for you. See what else comes up for you. Witness what unfolds when you are not all consumed with that little incessant voice in your head. Worst case scenario you can always return to it and listen away if you decide to because it won’t have gone far, it won’t have shut up, if anything, for a while if you are ignoring it, those thoughts will increase in content, velocity and volume in fear that you are turning your back on them and you are. So try listening to another voice instead, one that will better serve you in every way and is actually there to help as opposed to hinder.
