The Beginners’ Journey

Where to start when you decide to create? You’ve scrolled through endless hours of social media content, you have been inspired and you have made a decision. You want to be an artist (Illustrator, designer, sculptor etc). So you have run a google search on how to do just that and the information is overwhelming. There are so many methods and paths to take, so many people telling you the surefire way of making a success of yourself and your creative endeavours. And really the bottom line is they are all someone’s stories.

They are their experiences shared in the hope that they will assist you in some way. The truth is we all have our own story, you and me both and this journey of creativity will be as individual to you as mine has been to me. Yet the overall essence may have many similarities. The thinking that permeates you before you sit down to create, ‘Am I good enough?’ ‘Has little old me got anything to say worth listening to?’ ‘Does anyone even want to see what I am creating?’ ‘I am sure others could do much better than me,' ' I will never be as good as the new social media phenomena that I follow.' 'I don’t know anything, I don’t even know where to start', it’s all just too overwhelming. And this shows up in everybody’s story, whether they are a huge success in their work or whether their thoughts were so loud and overpowering, that they never began and their talents lay latent within them.

So begin your journey knowing that the same thoughts have and will enter the minds of everyone who creates anything and that those very same thoughts are not signaling your talents or lack of. They are just thoughts and we all have them, so set them aside and get creating. Let us not make a career out of all the cacophony of thoughts rollicking around our heads and instead let them play out in the background, and pick up your medium of choice and begin. Those thoughts most likely are going nowhere for now, so don’t wait on them to disappear or wait until you feel you have done enough to appease them. They are insatiable. Just begin.
