Waiting For Permission

Whose Permission Are You Waiting For?
Sometimes without our knowing, we want to do something but don’t. There are no obvious obstacles that we can see in our paths but there is no movement, no traction. It could be something as simple as deciding to paint, write, sing, and create. And there you are in the silence of your space and there are all the materials you need in front of you and you do not move.
There could be a reason and the reason could be that you are waiting. Waiting for permission to begin. The notion of waiting for approval or permission is permeated within our society and we learn it from the time we are young and are taught to raise our hand in class to answer a question, or ask one or even for something as simple as needing the toilet.
“Please Miss, can I?” Sometimes that thinking doesn’t fully leave us. And it seems to be strongest when we are a little older and want to do something just for ourselves. And so there enters an invisible audience whose permission we are waiting to be granted before we can begin. Someone who would say to us, “yes, start, it is your turn.”
And then there is the permission to fail. To allow ourselves to create something out of nothing and it not be up to our or anyone’s standard. The notion that we can have a go and try our best and fall ridiculously short and to know that is ok; there are no casualties.
If we could just begin without waiting for permission and simultaneously give ourselves the permission to just have a go without any grandiose expectations then the creations would begin and their outcomes would not be the sole reason for starting. It would be because we decided to create something and then just did it. No fanfare, no permission, just allowance of doing that which stirred within us a passion for something that was yet to exist in our lives.
